After checking in and having a quick bite to eat, members will get special access to items that will not be seen by the general public and details about how the exhibit was curated.
Join us as we honor the history of the Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky, who during the Great Depression delivered books to America’s poorest and most isolated people. They believed in the power of books and how books can unite us and build stronger communities. New York Times, USA TODAY, Los Angeles Times bestselling author Kim Michele Richardson has written four historical works on the Pack Horse Librarians. In a rare public appearance, she will join us to talk about their history, discuss her efforts to commemorate them, and sign copies of her books, which Carmichael’s will sell on site. Other special guests will include Eastern Kentucky librarian Laura Adams. We also hope to have join us Janice Kreider, whose mother Irene was a Pack Horse Librarian, along with Julianne Stamper, who remembers them as a child growing up in Appalachia. Fiddler Jannell Canerday from Louisville Folk School will provide music.
Travel back in time with us as we pay a visit to the 70s, 80s, and 90s. From pet rocks to Titanic these day camps are sure to be pretty rad.
Each day this week we’ll focus on a different art discipline–painting, sculpture, music, theater, and film. We’ll host visiting artists for hands-on experiences, learn about the history and cultural influence of specific artists and art movements, and take mini-field trips around the block to explore Main Street art sites and museums.
Calling anyone from an alternate universe! Every summer is loaded with blockbuster movies and superheroes, so it should come as no surprise that people have always loved a good hero or heroine story. This week we’ll find the balance between real world and fantasy as we meet Wizards, Jedis, Mutants and plenty of real people with amazing abilities.
Journey around the world without ever leaving downtown Louisville! The Frazier History Museum becomes your train station, airport, speed boat and hot air balloon as we go around the world in... 5 days! From Monkey's Eyebrow, KY to the Galápagos Islands, each day will take us to a new and exciting locale rich in history, culture, and intrigue.
Do you have what it takes to be in charge at the Frazier? We’ll spend this week learning what goes into all the ways our museum engages with the public. We’ll uncover behind-the-scenes secrets by taking basement-to-boardroom tours and by meeting with staff members in different museum departments. Each camper will work solo or in teams to create what we in the biz call an “engagement:” a historic interpretation, a game or craft, or a tour of their favorite exhibit. Campers will spend the week perfecting it before they run the show on Friday for the public–and for invited parents.
“Once upon a time . . .” begins so many our favorite childhood stories. But what were these “times” really like? In this lighthearted camp we’ll play and create and imagine all day to catch the glimmer of truth behind the Pied Piper, a giant blue ox, swashbuckling pirates, and a princess and one pesky pea.
